12th Annual Crooked Creek Triathlon:

What others are saying about Crooked Creek

The 2007 Crooked Creek Triathlon surpassed my expectations. The event was well organized with plenty of smiling volunteers. The race venue, simply put - exceptional. It must rank as one of the best venues in the state and possibly the entire region. The Crooked Creek Triathlon will definitely be on my race schedule for years to come. Daniel Fletcher, Harpers Ferry, WV.

Triathletes in S.W. Pa. are very fortunate to have a challenging, high quality olympic distance race in our area. I recommend the Crooked Creek Triathlon for all triathletes sprint or olympic.
Bill Jester,Elizabeth,Pa.

A great triathlon with more variety than most. Scenic rolling hills of Pennsylvania farm land with just the right variety of supporters and time alone. Brad Johnston, University of Pittsburgh

Two Options for More Information and Registration:

online via Active.com: click here for online registration
register by mail: downloadable PDF application

Regardless of how you register, photo ID is required at check-in on race-day morning, no exceptions.

As of 2007, we stopped paying half the Active.com fee. We are told that our fees are already very low and it's a headache for bookkeeping. Thank you for understanding.
Same Day: Same day registration is allowed until 7:30 am. Add $10 per person ($15 per team). Arrive early; the number of participants is limited.

Starting time: 9:00 am

Collegiate Challenge
- New in 2005, the University of Pittsburgh claimed the trophy for Collegiate Team. Team members can be alumni, students, or staff from the same college or university. We don't have enough newcomers showing up in this event. Please help us get the word out OR tell us what we can do better.

Course Maps

  • Swim Course Map - changes in transition area noted.
  • Bike Map (10,000 foot view in same window, transitions shown on swim area map.)
  • Run Map (same window)
Course Descriptions: SPRINT: 750m swim, 17.5k bike, 5k run.
  • Swim: (new window) 2008: An "L" shaped out and back course. DIRECTIONS: Starting at the beach, swim out with the buoy line on your left, then turn left at the big corner buoy. Continue to the turnaround marker buoy and swim around it counterclockwise. On your return leg as you get closer to the short leg of the "L", you will have buoy lines on both sides creating a chute. Swim up the "chute" and then follow the buoy line on your right to hit the beach. It's a 90 degree turn that's rounded to avoid collisions.
  • Bike: Unless it's rainy or the road is wet from fog, this is a scenic back roads course that you should revisit when you have time to enjoy it. You gotta love them HILLS and downhill is best! DIRECTIONS: Walk your bike to the starting line - NO RIDING in the transition area. Follow signs out of the beach area and turn right at the main road, SR 2019. Turn right at Brown Hill Rd. After going up and down two hills, turn left at the stop sign and coast down to the small bridge and across. After the bridge, turn right and follow Campbell's Run Road to your turnaround spot, just before the intersection with Garrett's Run Rd. Note: Volunteers will be stationed at all turns during the race to make sure you stay on course. Make sure volunteers get your number at the turn-around check-point.
  • Run: Three point two miles of really nice scenery if sweat doesn't get in your eyes. DIRECTIONS: Go back up the beach access road and, at the first full intersection, turn left. At Church Creek Road, turn right. After a long downhill at Rt 2019 (the main access road), turn sharp right and head uphill. At the park entrance, turn right again and follow the signs back to the finish line at the beach. Although volunteers will be stationed at turns, it is your responsibility to watch for signs AND volunteers so you stay on course. There are two water stations along this Sprint running course. Don't dehydrate, drink up!
Intermediate: 1500 meter swim, 37k bike, 10k run. (formerly "Olympic")
  • Swim: Two laps of the 750m course. See above. UPDATED 2007
  • Bike: Garretts Run Road which was a labyrinth of pothole patches in the past, was tarred and chipped in 2007, making it much safer than pre-2006. DIRECTIONS: Follow the directions for the Sprint above as far as the turnaround which is the first place they differ. Instead of turning around, turn right on Garrett's Run Rd. and follow it approx. 5 miles to the turnaround at Brick Church.
  • Run: The Sprint Intermediate running leg is the similar to Sprint with an out-and-back to create Olympic mileage. Instead of turning right at Church Creek Road, continue straight ahead for another 1.5 miles. The turn-around and check-point are just before it intersects with a main road, Alternate State Route 66. Coming back from the turn-around, turn left at Church Creek Road and run the remainder of the same loop as in the Sprint event. At Rt 2019 (the main access road), turn sharp right and head uphill. At the park entrance, turn right again and follow the signs back to the finish line at the beach. Water stations are approximately every mile along the course.
Rules This triathlon will not be sanctioned this year by USA Triathlon, but generally follows the rules posted on their website: Rules
